The Wood Song
05:15
|
|||
We’ll take the little path that leads you down
to the woods below
Where the oak trees grow
And hurrying be the first to reach
The Squeaking gate
Now don’t be late
No time to waste!
Maybe if we wait a while, we will see the geese come in
And maybe I will see you smile when they land on hovering wings
We’ll cross the wooden bridge over the pond
Watching out for trolls,
We’ll pay their toll
With treasures we have gathered from the ground
We’ll bring our offerings
Of leaves and things
We’ll throw them in…
The rising of the sun And the running of the deer
The holly and the ivy In the same place every year
We’ll take the path the leads us further in
Past a holly tree
and a swamp we see
It takes us through a tunnel made of green
in the summer time
but when winter shines
it’s of blackened tines
Now the green blade rises from its deeply buried grain
Now is the month of maying, where the merry lads, they play
We’ll make our way across the stepping stones
to the other side
where the fairies hide
We’ll wear our magic coronets of leaves
taken from the ground
in a dell we found,
We’ll dance around
Summer is y-coming in, and the cuckoo sings his song
Underneath the greenwood tree you will sing along…
We’ll scramble up the bank and race along
To the grassy field
where the wind blows strong
And take a hidden pathway to the left
through the warp and weft
Of branches cleft
Our footsteps deft
Mists and mellow fruitfulness, the maturing sun shines down
Bringing all the seasons home to a frosty bed of ground

Angel Bread
03:35
|
|||
Teach me how,
How to make Angel bread
On a rainy afternoon
When the Spring comes round
Comb your hair,
Bind it with golden thread
And we’ll eat with silver spoons
When the crust is browned
Apple trees
with silver leaves
And daffodils
On the window sill
And the cloudy sky
That brightens by the hour
Dance with me
Dance in your stocking feet
In a dress you made last night
From an old green cloak
Down the hall, then
Come to the window seat
Tell me everything you’ve seen
Since the last we spoke
Paperbacks
In coloured stacks
With battered spines and
Pencil lines
In the margins
where you scribbled in the night
Rage with me
Rage at the world
But don’t forget to laugh with me as well
When all is done
Stay with me
Stay til the sun comes up
And the morning light shines through
Onto crumpled sheets
Let me see
See how you hold your cup
As we watch the coffee brew
And the night retreats
Wait with me
Wait til the shadows pass the tree
Go when you must
We both know one day
You’ll come back again
To make Angel bread

Raise a glass, take a sip from Singapore
What are you waiting for?
Come with me,
Let’s go round the world in a ship in a bottle, and
we’ll put on our finest dancing shoes
and we’ll go down
to the waterfront
it’s a warm night
too nice to stay inside
and all we need is a tall ship
and a neon star
to steer her by
Maybe you’ll take a glass of golden rum
still warm from the sun of the South Seas
Or perhaps you might prefer it over ice
Or mixed with lime and just a dash of spice
Who knows best? It’s up to you
So many things to try!
But here you’ll find your tall ship
and a neon star to steer her by
Pour me a glass of oranges from Spain
Top it up with champagne and
dance the night away beneath the crescent moon
dance your way across the crowded room!
Let’s sail her on to the eastern seas
Beyond the brightening sky
We’ve found us a tall ship
And a neon star to steer her by
Raise a glass to all who sail with her,
in jeans or sequins or high heels,
Raise your glass to those who’ve sailed with her before
Raise a glass and laugh as we come ashore
And when you want to come with me
And sail beneath the sky
Put on your finest dancing shoes
And hold your head up high
All we need is a tall ship
And a neon star to steer her by

Wings on the Wind
03:11
|
|||
She stands on the clifftop
Small against the waves and the wind, back straight, legs braced
At the point where land meets sea meets sky,
Where ragged rocks
Endure the beating of the sea
Endure the crashing of the waves
She gasps as she stumbles back towards her old car
her shelter from the wind
Her ears ring loud in the quiet of the stillness
She finds herself in
The earth must surely break in two
No living thing could make it through
Blow, wind, blow
Blow, wind, blow
And the she sees rising high above the waves, a shape in grey and white
It move with casual, breathtaking grace, this dancing bird in flight
Being of feather and hollow bone
Who dares to call the sea your home
Fly,
Fly...
Is it bird, is it wind, or the spirit of a sailor long ago lost at sea?
He will dance with the wind, who is partner not tormentor
Just how it’s meant to be
He flies for flying sake
A flight that he alone can take
Fly,
Fly...

Perhaps
02:35
|
|||
Say it now and I will ease my head
from your shoulder
And slip silent from your bed
Shrug my jeans on in the dark,
Make my way across the ark,
By dawn I will be halfway round the world.
I'll numb my heart in neon, stone and wine
Of a bar that's underground
You'd never find
Perhaps one day you’ll hear from me
A postcard from across the sea
A letter from a place you'll never go
I'll send a drunken text on Hogmanay -
Don’t kid yourself, I shall be far away.
Always moving further on
Always carrying a song
That's light enough to take me anywhere

Miss May
04:12
|
|||
The other day I saw a girl
With golden hair, she walked like you
She crossed the road in faded jeans
Her feet were bare inside her shoes
And though I knew you’d never be
So far away from the sea
I couldn’t help but say
It’s Miss May
You disappeared into the crowd
I called you name, cried it aloud?
But as it wasn’t really you
There wasn’t much that I could do
It’s been so long in any case
You might not even know my face
Or call to mind my name...
I found a pile of letters
In a cupboard by the stair
Exactly where I left them
when I safely stored them there
Wrapped in a coloured ribbon
Tied around a strand of hair
Written in your hand
Miss May
(Miss May)
Why’d you have to walk away?
I’ll write a song and sing it
To the wind that blows towards the sea
I’ll write a letter in fine blue ink and
hang it from a wishing tree
I’ll climb to where to river starts
And send a message from the heart -
I’ll send the mountain down
Rock by rock and grain by grain
So it carries past the plain
Miss May,
Why'd you have to walk away?
(Miss May)
When you see me won't you stay?
